What Are Porcelain Crowns?

A porcelain crown acts as a “cap” that is securely cemented onto the damaged tooth. The crown covers the entirety of the tooth and adds strength and function back to your smile so that you can continue to eat and drink normally. While they can be made of many different types of materials, porcelain crowns appear the most natural due to their translucent appearance.

A crown may be used in cases of extreme decay or damage where the tooth cannot be restored through fillings.

What Is the Process for Receiving a Porcelain Crown?

Porcelain crowns typically require two appointments to be placed. During your first appointment, we will clean the tooth and reshape it to accommodate the crown and ensure it fits comfortably in your bite. Then, we will take impressions of your teeth. This will help us to create the proper shape for your crown. While we are creating your permanent crown, we will place a temporary one on the tooth, which you will wear for about two to three weeks.

Once your crown is ready, we will have you come back to the office for placement. We’ll then remove the temporary crown and place the permanent one. Once we are confident in its shape, color, and placement, we will cement it onto your tooth.

What Are Porcelain Bridges?

Porcelain bridges are a natural-looking option for replacing missing teeth. They are placed using dental cement between two other healthy teeth called abutment teeth, which support the replacement tooth. The abutment teeth are then covered with a porcelain crown to create a “bridge.”

What Is the Process for a Bridge Placement?

Similarly to a crown, a bridge also requires two appointments. During the initial appointment, the abutment teeth are reshaped to fit the crown and replacement tooth. Then, the impressions are taken to get exact measurements of your mouth for the lab. These are then sent off to create custom crowns and a replacement tooth for your mouth. A temporary bridge will be placed until the permanent bridge is ready.

Once they have come back from the lab, we will have you return to the office to have the bridge placed. We will ensure the crowns fit onto the abutment teeth with the replacement tooth comfortably supported between them. The bridge is then cemented into place.
